oh, i see. a throne for the tv... room for movies... your workout gear... non-stop football... it's a man cave! the boys next door will never leave. who says we want them to? your realtime captioner is linda marie macdonald. good afternoon, i'm frank mallicoat. and we begin with four women assaulted while asleep in their dorms at san jose state university. and now police are on the hunt for their attacker. gil diaz is live in san jose

with what investigators know so far. gil. >> reporter: hi, frank. good afternoon. well, that woman called campus police around 3:30. and the incident happened at this residence hall right behind me known as joe west. now, even though the woman lives on the third floor, investigators are still trying to figure out whether the attacker went through more than one floor. the biggest mysteries remain unsolved this noon. just who is this guy and how did he get in? >> it said, a, let's male 20s black clothing tried doors in joe west, entered room and groped victim. last seen third floor joe west. residents lock doors, police on scene. >> reporter: that's the text message nicole brock meyer received in the middle of the night after another dorm resident reported being groped by a stranger. during the investigation, other students came forward. in all, there were four victims. >> the victims.

>> other individuals came forward and started waking up. >> reporter: none of the women was hurt or hospitalized. the man may have gone door to door checking to see which ones were unlocked. all of the women he groped did not lock their doors. but it's a mystery how the attacker got in the dorm. >> at 10:00 the back door locks and this door stays open and they have ras and people sit there is making sure who comes in and out and signing the guests and stuff. but at 3 a.m. that's off. >> we have an ongoing problem like any other apartment manager with residents allowing others to tailgate in. we are' always discouraging that. >> reporter: police are still figuring out if the groper was another student. they are reviewing surveillance video. >> if we believe it will be helpful in identifying the suspects we'll release them to the students who are most

likely to recognize him. >> reporter: counselors will be provided to those four women and later today, we're told that campus police will be holding meetings floor by floor of joe west building to talk to students about what happened and to remind them about safety and security. in the meantime, they want residents to always lock doors. >> thank you, gil diaz live down on the south bay. a berkeley community is in shock after a man was shot several times last night. it's the city's first murder of the year. anne makovec with the emotional reaction from friends and neighborssay the victim was a parent working two jobs to support his family. >> they told me he had like 20 bullet shots in him. that's just -- i mean, why would somebody want to kill somebody like that? [ crying ] >> reporter: and apartment riddled with bullet holes after dozens of rounds were fired just before 7 p.m. last night. the couple that lives here was inside waiting for their friend to arrive but instead, that friend, whom they have

identified as kenny, was shot multiple times outside. he died at the hospital. this woman has known him since he was a kid. [ crying ] >> he was a good person. they took a good human being away from here. >> reporter: kenny worked at this barbershop on emerson and shattuck and neighbors said he had just gotten off work and was climbing the stairs to go to the apartment when he was hit. >> he was good. why did he have to get shot? >> reporter: friends say he was a single father with a second job at the port of oakland. >> i know that he is definitely, definitely a role model for many of the youth here. he is definitely just been kind of an epitome that people look up to and inspire to be. >> reporter: police believe he was targeted and so do people who live nearby and heard the barrage of gunfire. >> to shoot somebody that many times, you really make sure that you got him. you know, they made positive they killed him.

>> i hope they catch the people who did it. that's all i can say. [ crying ] >> reporter: this is berkeley's first murder of 2012. there was only one in all of 2011. >> and i know that his mama and them are going to miss him, and his children. we will miss him. that's all i can say. he will be missed. >> reporter: in berkeley, anne makovec, cbs 5. strangers rushed to help when a boat with three people on board capsizes in the waters off the coast of san francisco. the coast guard says the boston whaler flipped in some high surf off ocean beach around 5:30 last night. people onshore tried to help before emergency crews were out scene. a jogger saw a woman signalling for help, saw people dragging someone out of the ocean. he helped keep the victim warm for a while. all three boaters all rushed to the hospital. two were suffering from hypothermia. one of them is in critical condition. san francisco's sheriff still cannot see his family this afternoon. a judge refused to lift that

protective order keeping ross mirkarimi from his wife and two- year-old son theo. she did say the sheriff can petition family court for visitation rights. >> i'm incredibly disappointed, to say the least. i mean, this has been enormously crushing, the fact that i haven't been able to see my family, be with my wife or within my son. this is disproportionately cruel. >> that order was put in place while mirkarimi awaits trial for domestic abuse charges. california's supreme court ruled this morning that newly drawn maps for the state senate will be used in this year's elections. the ruling deals a big blow to the state gop leaders who are seeking to block democrats from gaining enough seats to pass taxes on their own. state republicans are seeking an initiative to overturn the new boundaries and wanted the new maps thrown out until

voters decide. within the last hour, state regulators approved tougher auto emissions standards. the air resources board unanimously passed the mandate. it requires 1.4 million electric and hybrid vehicles on state roads by the year 2025. now, the plan also calls for automakers to reduce smog- forming pollutants by 75% and a 34% reduction in greenhouse gas initiatives. city leaders in oakland will unveil a budget cutting proposal to save some jobs. the proposals takes into company and extra $7.5 million that will be available to cover the cost of layoffs including unemployment and pension benefits. it also delays the layoffs beyond february 3. still around 80 people could lose their jobs because of the loss of that redevelopment funding. "occupy oakland" is vowing to return to action this weekend. "occupy" supporters flooded the rafters at oakland city hall on wednesday night to protest

proposed redevelopment cuts we just talked about those and now they plan to take over an undisclosed vacant building in the city. and in a letter to mayor quan quan, the "occupiers" threaten if they are evicted, they will block oakland airport, "occupy" city hall and shut down the port of oakland. city of capitola will borrow $2.4 million to move people living in an area -- a mobile home area that was devastated by floods last year. a drainage pipe burst during a heavy rainstorm flooding the city-owned parks as well as parts of the downtown. securing the park against future flooding was deemed too expensive. san francisco's police chief says his officers had a tough time communicating during the recent 49ers play-off game. they could not call one another or barely receive text messages during the game. the chief made those comments in support of a $100 million proposed communications network for first responders only. and it's a shocking bomb

tuesday's big primary. today's focus, immigration. randall pinkston on the front- runners' race to sway hispanic voters. >> reporter: mitt romney and newt gingrich are back on the campaign trail shaking hands and trying to win the backing of florida's 1 1/2 million hispanic gop voters. both candidate are speaking at a hispanic conference and bracing for questions about their fiery exchanges over immigration during thursday night's debate. gingrich took a shot at romney's record. >> is he still the most anti- immigrant candidate? >> i think of the four of us yes. >> reporter: the former massachusetts governor struck back hard. >> my father was born in mexico. my wife's father was born in wales. they came to this country. the idea that i'm anti- immigrant is repulsive. >> reporter: new poll numbers released friday morning show gingrich's lead in florida is over. he slipped 9 points behind romney just days before the primary. president obama is keeping his focus on the economy. he is on the final leg of a three-day, five-state swing, visiting the university of michigan. he is pushing a new plan to

make college more affordable. >> the bottom line is that an economy built to last demands we keep doing everything we can to bring down college costs. >> reporter: he appears ready to challenge the gop on economic proposals trying to convince voters they are promoting old ideas that failed in the past. at the white house, randall pinkston cbs 5. >> the primary is on tuesday. as many as 20 construction workers injured this morning in cincinnati after the floor gave out at a casino under construction. workers were pouring concrete on the second floor when a support beam gave way sending all the workers 25 feet down. everyone is examined to be okay. the same team is behind another project in cleveland that saw a similar collapse last month. high school sophomore in utah is credited with foiling a plot to bomb her school. the student says she is received a suspicious text message from another student

and shared it with school administrators. two students were then arrested. police say they found maps and information about school security systems and they say the teens planned to flee using a stolen plane after that bombing. passengers on that ill- fated italian cruise liner will receive more than $14,000 each following the fatal accident off the coast of tuscany. the announcement came from thetals association of tour operators. -- the italian association of tour operators. the deal doesn't apply to hundreds of crewmembers who lost their jobs or those injured. 16 people were killed in the accident, 16 still missing two weeks after the accident. facebook warning users of yet another scam. how liking something could lead to credit card trouble. we'll fill you in. plus she is described as having convulsions after smoking something. the dramatic demi moore 911 tapes just released. and a midair scare. what passengers did when an engine did shut down in the middle of a flight. the offshore winds are

control of his sled midair an crashed, but incredibly he rode in the finals and pulled off a near perfect run to beat his brother caleb for the gold medal. everyone believable. passengers on a plane going from portland to seattle were shocked when a plane stopped the working. you can see cell phone video of the propeller coming to a stop in midair. >> this huge explosion and all of a sudden everything stopped and it just got totally quiet and everybody started to panic and every phone was out. [ laughter ] >> so we're all just thankful to be back now that i can laugh about it but it was scary. yeah. it was just complete silence. and it just stopped. >> the pilot quickly turned the plane around and made an emergency landing. nobody was hurt. the video is scary. horizon air is investigating. the plane is designed to fly with one engine, but two is preferrable if you're a

passengerrable. >> i'm not big on those prop planes. i'm more of a jet guy myself. >> started out with fog this morning. >> we did. it was neat. >> i put some pictures on my facebook page and people went bananas. >> now it's gone. we are seeing the offshore wind blowing. toward the afternoon, how about this? neat shot from our mount vaca cam looking toward the golden gate bridge. your skies have cleared out to the coastline after starting out with some very dense fog early on this morning. still, it looks like we are going to see the temperatures popping up outside as we're expecting those numbers to rise into the 60s in many spots. becoming sunny and hazy outside, breezy in the hills though with those offshore wind and mostly dry over the weekend, although something is sneaking our way toward the latter part of sunday. out over the bay, looking good right now. we have 63 degrees in concord. 60 in oakland. and 60 degrees in san francisco. so these temperatures really starting to come up. high pressure building in once again and it's going to nestle in right over saturday and that means a great start to the weekend. lots of sunshine coming our way

and these temperatures headed well above the average. now, we do have a weak system that's going to be coming in our direction but in the meantime, mild temperatures, breezy conditions in the hills, eventually something rolls over the top here late sunday night and into monday. that will bring with it clouds and a slight chance of sprinkles north of the golden gate bridge. but let's plan on these great temperatures today. 67 degrees in san jose. 67 in morgan hill. about 64 in los gatos, 62 at the coast and half moon bay. mid-60s in many of the valleys. about 65 degrees in livermore. 66 in pleasanton. and about 65 degrees in vallejo. inside the bay you'll find plenty of hazy sunshine and a beautiful winter afternoon. 63 in san francisco. 67 with some downslope winds in santa rosa. looking out over the next few days, plenty of sunshine through the first part of the weekend. things switch gears a bit maybe more of a sea breeze kicking in, into sunday bringing with it more clouds cooling down the temperatures and again, that weak system slides in looks like late sunday night into monday bringing more clouds and slight chance of rain north of

the golden gate bridge. after that a few more clouds coming but the temperatures staying down a bit staying dry it looks like for the next five to seven days. all right. some folks actually may want to get up to the snow: roads are clear. heavenly 24 lifts open 25. to 35 inches of snow on the ground. northstar also looking at partly cloudy skies. 18 to 36." what they call packed powder. squaw valley lots of powder up there as well partly cloudy skies. looking good. >> we got 67 and 68 late january. >> and we're probably going to see 70s in the monterey bay. >> jackpot. >> yeah. >> thank you. the frantic 911 call from actress demi moore's friends has been released finally. moore was rushed to the hospital on monday night. now, a friend tells the operator, quote, she smoked something. it's not marijuana. but it's similar to it. the dispatcher asked if moore is breathing normally. the friend says, she's coming convulsing so we are holding

her down. tmz says she took a potent hit of nitrous oxide. facebook says look out for new spam on their time lines. it's called like jacking drawing facebook users to the popular like feature and then enticing them to click on websites that lead to identity and credit card theft. >> this company is misleading you, the consumer, into thinking that you are getting a message from a friend. and in fact, that is an advertisement. >> facebook and the washington state attorney general are suing the online marketing company add skin media over the spam. facebook says it's devicing a fix but says it's difficult to stay ahead of the scammers. a tennis match between two of the best players on the planet but it was the ball boy who stole the show. see it up dr. -- see it coming up.

well, today for tony's table we're going to make something simple, sausage, rigatoni, lentils a little bit of stock and garlic. you can have a wonderful dish called [ non-english language ] pastas with lentils and sausage. all need is one link of sweet or hot sausage and put that in there with a little bit of garlic and olive oil, render some of the fat, take it out.

put in lentils in a can in there. then the rigatoni pasta. let it all sit there for a little while and low heat so you don't turn the lentils into paste and then finish this off. we'll add a little cheese. this is the pecorino romano and sharpness. we are going to add parsley. then we'll add a touch not too much salt. and a little bit of ground pepper. and that's it. now we're going to be ready to plate it. here we go. a simple dish that's so easy to make. and it will warm you go. pasta with sausage and lentils. tony's table. easy, enjoy, bon appetito and ciao. you have to look at this shot at the australia open. it's not by the players. and it's actually a catch by the ball boy during the nadal-
